Targeting d4

At the recently ended International Chess Festival "M. Sadoveanu", my colleague Bogdan Girmacea finished with 5.5/9 making him best placed U2000 participant. Bogdan has earned 80 euros for this excellent result, drinks on him next time we meet :)

For all those French defence players having problems against Tarasch 3.Nd2 here's a hint - press on d4 pawn and while opponent is busy there, hit him on h2. Bogdan's last round game is nice example.

Daianu Cristian 2133 - Bogdan Girmacea 1986
Round 9

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nd2 Nf6 4. e5 Nfd7 5. Ngf3 c5 6. c3 Nc6 7. Bd3 g6

With this move, which might seem a bit unusual, black is preparing the attack in the center and especially against d4 pawn. Black’s idea is to play further Bg7, 0-0, f6! and after white takes on f6, that Bg7 will play an active role on that diagonal, pressuring over d4 pawn. All that black has to be careful about is not to allow white to block him on e5 square.

8. 0-0 Bg7 9. Bc2 0-0 10. Re1 cxd4 11. cxd4 f6! 12. exf6 Nxf6 13. Nb3 Qd6

I had to chose between Qd6 and Qb6. Qb6 was good because it adds more pressure on d4 pawn which is black’s main target, but Qd6 is a bit more flexible, keeping an eye on e5, c5 squares, protecting e6 pawn and also makes possible some attacking ideas with Ng4, Rxf3 and Qxh2+.

14. Bg5 a5! (Nb3 defends d4 pawn, so black is trying to remove that defender; ofcourse now white can play a4 to prevent that, but that move is a bit too compromising).

15. Qd2? This is a mistake. Black wants some Bf4 or Bh6 ideas, but that queen played a good role defending that Nf3. Better for black was to try to block e5 square with Ne5, although the game would get extremely complicated and apparently favorable to black.

15...Ng4! 16. h3 Rxf3! 17. gxf3 Qh2+ 18. Kf1 Qh3+ 19. Ke2 Nh2! 20. Qf4 a4!
All moves are coming at the right time. By sacrificing on f3, black has removed 1 defender of d4 pawn. A4 move is trying to removing last defender.

It's obvious that if knight moves, Nxd4+ is coming with decisive advantage for black. White tried Rh1, but it doesn’t help at all.

21. Rh1 axb3 22. Rxh2 Nxd4+ Black resigned
