Semicolon's History

Ancient Greeks used it as a question mark; and after classical scholar and master printer Aldus Manutius revived it in a 1494 font set, semicolons slowly spread across Europe. Though London first saw semicolons appear in a 1568 chess guide, Shakespeare grew up in an era that still scarcely recognized them; some of his Folio typesetters in 1623, though, were clearly converts.

Running a corporation is like playing chess

Next come the rooks. In my thinking, these are the people in Engineering and HR. They can move only in straight lines, but they can be useful in battle if you force them to get off their backsides (backlines) and make a difference.

GM Ian Rogers In Music Business?

For a moment I also thought that Australian Chess Grandmaster Ian Rogers decided to take on Internet business after his premature retirement from competitive chess. But after seeing the photo, I realized that TechCrunch tricked us, chess addicts.

Here's what this is all about: "Ian Rogers, the former GM of Yahoo Music, has finally taken music startup TopSpin Media out of stealth mode. The new company will offer a marketing software platform for music artists to maximize their fanbase and brand exposure." Read more on TechCrunch.

I just hope Michael Arrington won't sue me for quoting more than four words...

Dylan Loeb McClain Writes For IHT

There was this occasional syndication (or whatever you call it, perhaps someone cares to explain) of New York Times chess column on the IHT website, but now NYT journalist Dylan Loeb McClain wrote an exclusive article for IHT (according to search results), while his Gambit Blog is hibernating since 6th June. The NYT Sunday printed column seems to be going according to schedule.

Vishy Anand About Origins Of Chess

We're so completely lost in our universe of 64 black and white squares that we like to think every move we make changes the way the world exists. So it's easy for Russians to imagine that chess began when they started to play it. In 1991, at my first international tournament, in Reggio Emilia in northern Italy, a Russian grandmaster condescendingly told me I could at best be a coffee-house player because I had not been tutored in the Soviet school of chess, which then dominated the sport. With the arrogance of youth — I was 21 — I thought to myself, "But didn't we Indians invent chess? Why shouldn't I have my own route to the top of the sport?"

Another Claimant on the US Women Title

We've read a lot about the controversy over the tiebreaks at the 2008 U.S. Women's Championship. There are letters from Irina Krush and an interview with Anna Zatonskih.
But now the situation is getting even more complicated as Elizabeth Vicary jumps in to declare her "own glorious victory!!"

I'm not going to bore you with my interpretation of the USCF Championship Guidelines.
Instead I appeal to your sense of fairness and truthiness.
After all, it's not what the rules say that matters.
It's what you know in your heart to be right.

The First Fischer Random Clock

Message from Albert Vasse, CEO of DGT Projects

DGT960 digital is the first chess clock that automatically and at random will generate 960 starting positions. The display shows symbols indicating in which position the pieces have to be placed on the board. It brings many chess-lovers back to the chessboard. The aspect of having a lead through knowledge of theory about chess opening moves sequences makes way for creative thinking.
This idea of former World champion Bobby Fischer, who recently passed away, has been the most important improvement in chess since 500 years. This chess clock is a gadget that every chess player would wish to have.

Ana Ivanovic New Tennis Queen

In a Roland Garros Women's semifinal that was promoting not only a finalist, but also the next WTA number one, Ana Ivanovic edged compatriot Jelena Jankovic by 2-1 (6-4, 3-6, 6-4). It was a beautiful match where two playing styles clashed and only small nuances decided the final outcome.

Ana Ivanovic is playing her third Grand Slam and second Roland Garros final. Jelena Jankovic remains close to the top and we can expect to see more from her in the future. Serbian doubles Nestor/Zimonjic have also qualified for the Saturday's final, and now we only wait for Novak Djokovic to oust supreme Roland Garros ruler Rafael Nadal.

Chess at the Luzhniki Stadium

Football at its best, and here it was often at its best, is a blend of chess, ballet and war. It was hard to discern the chess aspect, so frenetic was the pace. But ballet was represented by Ronaldo, with the lacquered hair and the step-overs that add to the impression of a puppet on speed. And war? Well, there were tussles everywhere.

CrowdChess Featured in Wall Street Journal Blog

Are amateurs collectively wiser than a single expert? That’s the question the Web site CrowdChess is trying to answer.

The book The Wisdom of Crowds promoted the idea that large groups are often able to make better decisions than experienced professionals. Over the last few years, that idea has been adopted as conventional wisdom: Some businesses have "crowd sourced" projects to communities; Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, grew from this notion.

To put the wisdom of crowds to the test, Stan Oleynick, the founder of CrowdChess, recruited Gawain Jones, a grandmaster from England, to play against the collective intelligence of his site’s visitors. "Chess is the ultimate game of strategy and foresight," and thus is a good test of crowd theory, Oleynick tells the Business Technology Blog.
