London Chess Classic 2011

The London Chess Classic, the strongest tournament in the history of British chess, runs from 3-12 December 2011.

The 2800 club makes yet another meeting right after the Tal Memorial and Carlsen, Anand, Aronian, and Kramnik will face each other in a round robin tournament together with Nakamura, Adams, Short, McShane, and Howell.

FIDE Candidates Tournament 2012

FIDE is opening a bidding procedure for the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2012 which will determine the challenger for the World Championship Match in 2013.

Proposed prize fund for the players is minimum 420,000 euros & should be offered net of any applicable local taxes.

WCC 2012 match contract signed

On Saturday, 26th November, the contract for the 2012 World Chess Championship match was signed by the reigning champion Viswanathan Anand, the challenger Boris Gelfand and the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

The signing took place in the offices of the “Interfax” news agency and a press conference followed immediately after.

The 12-games World Championship match will take place in May 2012 in Moscow with a prize fund of 2.55 million dollars. The playing venue will be at the Tretyakov Gallery.

The Mikhail Tal Memorial concluded Friday in the Russian capital. Anand and Gelfand were paired to play in the last round, but the game was an uneventful draw as obviously both players hide their preparation.

Carlsen takes the trophy at the 2011 Tal Memorial

Magnus Carlsen beat Hikaru Nakamura to take first place in the 6th Tal Memorial in Moscow. Carlsen quickly obtained a decisive advantage with black which he realised in a lengthy technical ending.

He edged out Levon Aronian who finished level with him on 5.5/9 due to the fact he had played more games with black, most other tie-breaks favoured the Armenian.

Hou Yifan retains the World Champion title

Hou Yifan, the 17-years old Chinese wonder and Women’s World Champion since 2010, will continue her reign for another year after defeating the challenger Humpu Koneru from India in the World Championship Match in Tirana, Albania.

The 8th game of the match finished in a draw as Humpy Koneru clearly lost the ambition to try and equalize the score in order to proceed into tiebreaks.

Yifan won three games and five were drawn for the final result of 5.5-2.5 (best of 10) in favour of the defending Champion.

Vizag GM International Open Chess Championship

Vizag GM International Open Chess Championship is scheduled to take place from from 23rd November to 1st December, 2011 at Swarnabharathi Indoor Stadium in Resapuvanipalem, Visakhapatnam, AP, India.

The tournament is organized by the All Vizag District Chess Association together with Andhra Pradesh Chess Association and under the aegis of All India Chess Federation.

After many years of playing the top board for the Spanish national team, Grandmaster Alexei Shirov decided to return to his native Latvia.

He is already settled in Riga and works to popularize chess.

54th Reggio Emilia Tournament

The 54th Torneo di Capodanno is set to take place from 27th December 2011 to 6th January 2012 in Reggio Emilia, Italy. The tournament is changing the format to the very popular six-player double round robin.

World Chess Cup 2013

FIDE Calendar has the 2013 World Chess Cup scheduled for Tromso, Norway, from 10-Aug-2013 to 5-Sep-2013.

Last week the Calendar also had FIDE Grand Prix tournaments for 2012 included, namely London, New York and Chelyabinsk, but the items have since disappeared from the page.

GM Gregory Kaidanov wins 20th Kings Island Open

The Kings Island Open celebrated its 20th anniversary this past Veterans’ Day Weekend, November 11-13th, and the guest list for the occasion was an impressive testament to the tournament. The Open Section was dedazzled by over 37 Masters, including ten Grandmasters and three International Masters!

Kentucky GM Gregory Kaidanov was white hot this weekend, winning all five games, including successive victories over GMs Dmitry Gurevich, Alexander Ivanov (play through the game below) and Alexander Goldin.

Georg Meier and Arkadij Naiditsch after winning the European team gold

Grandmasters Georg Meier and Arkadij Naiditsch from Germany after winning the team GOLD medal at the European Team Chess Championship in Porto Carras, Greece.

In the final round of the ETCC Open Section Armenia exercised the well known strategy of neutralising opponent's white pieces in the decisive match against the co-leading Germany. On boards one and three Levon Aronian and Vladimir Akopian quickly drew with Arkadij Naiditsch and Daniel Fridman, respectively.

On the 2nd board German rising star Georg Meier applied pressure on Sergei Movsesian's setup, achieved a substantial advantage and consequently converted into the full point.

Jan Gustafsson eventually pulled a draw in the exhausting game against Gabriel Sargissian and marked a huge celebration for the German team. Congratulations!

Humpy Koneru and Hou Yifan draw the first game of the WWCC Match

The first game of FIDE World Women’s Chess Championship Match between the current World Champion Hou Yifan (China) and challenger Humpy Koneru (India) finished with a draw.

Koneru played white pieces and opened with the Catalan. The game continued deeply into the Rook endgame with pawns on the same side, which eventually produced a draw.

2nd Copa Latinoamericana de Ajedrez in Uruguay

The 2nd Copa Latinoamericana de Ajedrez was held from 1st to 6th November at the Torre de las Comunicaciones in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The Championship was organized by the Uruguay Chess Federation and has attracted massive participation, with 228 players from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. Among them were 19 Grandmasters, 13 International Masters and 19 FIDE Masters.

Grandmasters Alexandr Fier from Brazil and Diego Flores from Argentina played a draw in the last round and jointly shared the first place with 7.5 points each. Fier takes the title on the better tie-break score.
