Indonesia Open Chess Championship Starting

Top seed Ivan Sokolov will begin his quest to be crowned Indonesia Open 2012 Champion with the white pieces against young Indonesian IM Taufik Halay while defending champion Li Chao will have black against local super star and current Asian Continental Champion WGM Irine Sukandar.

Going down the board order, former Philippine National Junior Champion Haridas Pasqua will not be a walkover for the other highly rated Chinese Yu Yangyi, Indonesia’s Pitra Andika will be looking to build on his surprise victory at the Brunei Open by getting a result against fifth seeded Sergey Fedorchuk but all eyes will be on veteran Jaan Ehlvest’s game with Medina Warda Aulia who in the last year has emerged as the the new darling of Indonesian chess and is arguably now their brightest young talent.

Other encounters look relatively straight forward but with Indonesians famed for their great tactical abilities, upsets are still are real possibility!

Of other young players, Bai Jinshi has already been making waves as one of China’s best young players and GM John Paul Gomez is expected to have his hands full while it will be interesting to see if Paulo Bersamina has developed since he burst on the scene as the youngest ever National Junior Champion in the Philippine a few years ago.
