Mamedyarov!

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov brought victory for Azerbaijan in the 3rd round of European championship. He sacrificed a rook against Peter Heine Nielsen and won in nice fashion.

GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave: I'm playing sharper than the others

Chessdom: How would you best define your chess style?

Maxime Vachier-Lagrave: I would describe myself as a pure calculator: I almost exclusively calculate lots of variations during my games. However, I have improved my strategical and technical play, but I am still stronger in very complicated positions, and when I need to calculate in endgames. One of my strength (or weakness, I still don't know) is that I may take great risks, but they are very carefully calculated, meaning I can hardly bluff: if I am sure a sac is wrong, even if the refutation is far from being obvious. On the other side, I am more confident when I take risks.

Boris Spassky: Karpov and Kasparov didn't appreciate Fischer

"Marriage has given me the opportunity to travel abroad, however, only after two years of war with the sports committee. In 1978, I became a citizen of France, and at the same time headed the Soviet team at the Chess Olympiad in Argentina. Up until 1983, I played under the Soviet flag and then I won the tournament in Linares ahead of Karpov. Whether this result was the trigger, I do not know, but soon I stopped receiving Soviet salary and invitations to the Soviet tournaments. The same year I issued a brief statement in the French Press Agency, and explained the reasons why I refuse to play under the Soviet flag. In 1984, I played for the first time in French team at the Chess Olympiad in Greece."

Boris Spassky about his life in Russia and France, about Fischer, Keres, Botvinnik, world championship and women.

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov: I make good money

"I launched professional chess career very late lacking finance and sponsor. That is why I could not participate in the international tournaments. I scored a grandmaster norm when I was 18. I still lack sponsor but since joining the chess elite I make good money", Azeri grandmaster Shakhriyar Mamedyarov told APA-Sport. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov said Teimour Radjabov is playing well now. "Teimour is playing too well now. He conquered the Corus tournament. We both are among the top ten grandmaster of the world. I have very good relations with Teimour".

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov touched upon his performance for Alkaloid in the European Club Cup in Turkey. "Alkaloid is being sponsored by chemical factory. I competed for Alkaloid for the first time. I accepted to take first board in Alkaloid receiving good financial offers".

Armenian chess teams unhappy with treatment in Turkey

Mika-Yerevan girls' team trainer Ashot Vardpetyan talked to Armenian press:

"This year, as compared to other years, the flags of victorious countries were not raised". The coach doesn't rule out the possibility of this happening due to the fact that Armenia was one of the countries which earned a medal.

Concerning the less-successful boys' team named Bank King, Vardpetyan thinks the reason for their lack of success might have been tied to the uncomfortable situation the team faced upon arrival in Turkey. "We were all staying in five-star hotels, and the boys room didn’t correspond to this rating," he said. In his words, the organizers didn't solve this problem, and the sportsmen were transferred to another hotel. "This might in fact have influenced their playing", he added.

Politics Killing Sport

We have heard the news from the World Junior Chess Championship when Iranian representative refused to play against Israeli junior and forfeited the game. This is not the first time that Israeli sportsmen were boycotted. The same U-20 World Championship is taking place in Erevan, Armenia and the absence of Azerbaijan juniors, who are by the way among the best in the world, is obvious.

Today in the 2nd round of the Essent Crown group, 2005-junior world champion Shakhryar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan beat 2006-champion Zaven Andriasian of Armenia. You can bet this will be the most important news in Azeri mainstream media.

Two nations are in a long standing conflict over the Nagorno Karabakh region. Teimour Radjabov was asked more about his loss to Armenian Levon Aronian at this year's Corus than about his fantastic result and shared first place at the same tournament. Radjabov also admitted that he was forcing too much because he so wanted to win against the Armenian.

Two nations were also paired in the same group in the qualifications for the European Football Championship 2008. Those two games haven't taken place yet, even if the cycle ends next month. They simply can't see each other's face, not even on the neutral field, as Belgrade suggested to be a host.

Speaking of Belgrade, Serbian football team was scheduled to play in Erevan and Baku this week. After 0-0 against Armenia, they were to fly to Baku. Alas, Azerbaijan refused any conversation about accepting a plane from Armenia territory. Serbian plane had to go to Tbilisi in Georgia, wait for Georgian transit visas, change flight code, and then continue to Baku. What a hassle! They were even advised not to take any souvenirs from Erevan, imagine.

Knowing very well consequences of unjustified banning of sports, as on "the great democrat" Garry Kasparov insisting, Serbia was expelled from the European Team Chess Championship 1992 after they already played 1st round, I am strongly against the intrusion of politics. Leave the sportsmen enjoy the games.

Red Star to take on Bayern Munich

Red Star Belgrade qualified for the UEFA Cup League after eliminating Groclin with 2-0 on aggregate score. We are now set to clash with Bayern Munich, Bolton, Braga (Portugal) and Aris (Greece) and fight for the top three places in the Group, which would allow red-whites to continue their UEFA journey on spring.

Red Star already smashed through Bayern in 1991 Champions Cup semifinal to take the trophy on the same year. Fans are delighted to host Bayern once again on 25 October hoping for the 1991 reprise.

From Guradian's "The Joy of Six: football's forgotten classics":

In his excellent book, Behind The Curtain: Travels in Eastern European Football, Jonathan Wilson writes the following: "For me, the Red Star team of 1991 remains the apogee of football - not the best side I have ever seen but the one that best combined the elements I would most want to see in a team I supported: technical brilliance, fluidity, a capacity for moments of staggering flair, supreme organisation, cynicism and a pervading sense of mental fragility." Seldom were these traits more apparent than in the European Cup semi-final bout with Bayern Munich.

After winning the away leg 2-1 thanks to whirlwind counter-attacking, Red Star seemed set to canter into the final when Sinisa Mihajlovic put them 1-0 up early in the home leg with a trademark long-range free-kick. But then, despite the incredible encouragement of 80,000 berzerkers, they lost their nerve - and Bayern came charging back. Klaus Augenthaler made it 1-1 with a long-distance drive before the superbly named Manfred Bender made it 3-3 on aggregate. Bayern almost snatched a winner in normal time but were denied by a post - and then came the dramatic, farcical finale: in the dying seconds Mihajlovic attempted to pick out Darko Pancev at the back post but underhit his cross; Augenthaler went to whack it clear but instead send the ball spinning backwards towards his own goal - where goalkeeper Raimond Aumann should have caught it comfortably ... but instead palmed it pathetically into the net to trigger bonkers scenes of celebration in the Crvena Zvezda Stadium.

Mihajlovic's last minute goal:

Imagine This Kind of Support

Even if only seldom, B92.net pleasantly surprised us with posting about chess in their individual sports section. The usual "chess is sport?" discussion immediately pops up, but I love it when a football fan comes in and leaves a chant like "Uzeo si trofej Perunee, Peruneee!" on article about Serbian Championship, or "I PAZI I PAZI ANAND GAZI" on the news about World Chess Championship. Here are couple of videos from Red Star's Lil Marakana:
