Readers have inquired about the so-called Great Debate which has never before been published. It took place on January 23, 1988 between Don Schultz, America's representative to FIDE, and myself on the Net via the defunct Leisure LINC chess network. Many of the issues debated such as the banning of players, the role of a free press, and censorship in Chess Life, are still controversial today.

Wow. Amazing this event is still buzzing after all these years. I remember hosting that event from a remote at a tournament in Asheville. Little did I know at the time what a firestorm would follow.
