Valerian Adam

All of you adult players having problem to raise your level, stop reading "Chess For Zebras" as a Bible and search for advice from a player who actually succeeded in the quest. Dr Valerian Adam, solid player for many years (as IM Tom O'Donnell told me), managed to raise his rating by 180 points in last two years, earning some IM norms in between.

First he scored 6.5/9 at the Third Saturday 2005 that was held on 16-21st April 2005 in Novi Sad, Serbia. Organizer was GM Sinisa Drazic and arbiter Danko Bokan. Valerian has earned 79 rating points and IM norm. One of the participants told me that "Valerian was pushed by Drazic", whatever that means...

He gets more active in 2006. First he wins Borovo-Beternik International tournament that was held on 24-29th April 2006. He had 7.5/10 and earned 57 points. Arbiter was Milutin Lukic.

After few days of break they play another tournament in Borovo-Beternik on 1-5th May. This time Valerian is tied on the 2nd place with 6.5/9 and only plus 15 rating points. 1st was Nikola Vasovski from Macedonia, another interesting character deserving his own post. Arbiter was again Milutin Lukic.

New tourney after two days. Agronom IM 2006 was played on 8-13th May in Novi Sad. Arbiter was Danko Bokan and Valerian Adam scores 6.0/9 and 29 rating points. Just look at this funny crosstable, four players out of ten have earned IM norms: Valerian Adam, Nikola Vasovski, Miroslav Pucovski and Atif Dumpor. Organizer again GM Sinisa Drazic.

I wanted to take a look at the games, but imagine, there are no games available. These events are bringing Dr Adam to the 9th place on Canada rating list, since some of their GMs are inactive, I'm wondering if they will consider him for the next Olympiad...

Are you suggesting this could be a fraud?

Very suspricious indeed considering there are no games available for anyone to review. I have never heard of Dr. Adam before this week, and although I live at the opposite side of the country, I know of pretty well most of the active Masters on the list. So unless this guy just moved to Canada, then I would say he's somewhat of an enigma. He's more active in Serbia than he is in Canada? Strange indeed...

Well his performance was pretty impressive, no? Hard to find someone (legal) to compare with. As I understood, Dr Adam is not a young player ready to skyrocket his rating.

Serbian Chess Federation is passive to investigate suspicious tournaments, we also have more then 500 titled players, hard to follow all of them. Not to mention code of silence.

Dr Adam, on the other side, is visibly high on Canadian rating list. I'm wondering if anyone from CFC ever asked what is happening. I was hoping to hear feedback from Canadian players, those that actually know Dr Adam.

I would suggest all you guys out there make sure you do your homework before jumping to whatever comclusions you choose to. However I am not surprised to see these reactions! It is common today for people to read on the internet and believe every single word someone writes without questioning it for 2 seconds.

For your information Mr Adam is originally from Romania where he was a long time solid player, known internationally in the Balkan region during the days of communism. He deflected to Canada and found work in Northern BC where there are very few (if any) chances to play strong tournaments. Still he played as often as he could given his profession (MD), including the annual Paul Keres Memorial in Vancouver, BC.

Mr Adam is close to his retirement (if he is not retired already), still has family and friends in Romania and it is normal for him to spend more time there since there are more opportunities to play chess.

I hope this clarifies that Mr Aadam is not just picking an area of the World to go and get IM norms. If anyone would want that, I am sure there are better and easier destinations such as Myanmar!...

Please remember: do your homework before passing on judgment!...

Eugen,

Wasn't it enough that Valerian's image was tarnished ? Now yours is also.

If this is the price I have to pay for defending someone I know since I was a junior, so be it!
