Nakamura shines in Donostia

US Champion Hikaru Nakamura won the main 18th category tournament of the Donostia Chess Festival. He took an early lead and had even a big point of advantage ahead of others, but Ruslan Ponomariov caught him in the final round and both finished with 6,5 points.

The winner was to be settled in blitz tiebreak, and Nakamura, as already established speed-chess expert, won both games and the trophy - traditional Basque hat.

It was shocking to see how rusty is the former world champion Karpov. He even spoiled some promising positions and ended up last, with only three draws and six losses.

Final scores:
1-2. GM Nakamura Hikaru (USA 2710) and GM Ponomariov Ruslan (UKR 2727), 6,5
3. GM Svidler Peter (RUS 2739), 5,5
4-5. GM Kasimdzhanov Rustam (UZB 2672) and GM Vallejo Pons Francisco (ESP 2693), 5,0
6-7. GM Movsesian Sergei (SVK 2716) and GM Vachier-Lagrave Maxime (FRA 2703), 4,5
8. GM Granda Zuniga Julio E (PER 2647), 3,5
9. GM San Segundo Carrillo Pablo (ESP 2570), 2,5
10. GM Karpov Anatoly (RUS 2644), 1,5
