82nd FIDE Congress in Krakow

FIDE held its 82nd Congress in Krakow between the 20th and 21st of October 2011, hosted by the Malopolska Chess Federation.

FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov announced that he had gained sponsorship of $1,000,000 per year for the next three years for the various Chess in Schools projects. He also added that Rapid and Blitz ratings will be calculated from 1st January 2012.

David Jarrett had resigned as FIDE Executive Director and is now appointed as an Honorary Member of FIDE. Nigel Freeman is the new Executive Director.

Three new members - Comoros Islands, Guam and Swaziland - were elected.

The contract between FIDE and the Tromso Organising Committee for the 2014 Olympiad was signed.

The World Youth Championships 2013 were awarded to Al Ain, UAE and those for 2014 to Durban, South Africa. The World Amateur Championship 2013 was awarded to Iasi, Romania and the World Cities 2012 was awarded to Al Ain, UAE.
