English Grandmaster Nigel Short won the Gibraltar Masters following a thrilling play-off match against Women's World Champion Hou Yifan. Nigel won the first rapid game and the second game was drawn.
Earlier, during the 10th round of the tournament, Hou Yifan pressed against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov but could not achieve more than a draw. She finished with 8/10 and waited for the development in other games.
Among the players who were trailing by half point behind Yifan, only Nigel Short was able to win - with black pieces against India's star Krishnan Sasikiran.
According to the tournament rules, in case of the tie on the first place, a play-off will be played to determine the overall winner. Short won by 1.5-0.5 and grabbed the £20,000 first prize, plus the Commonwealth prize of £5000 which was awarded in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
