A self-confessed fan of Real Madrid, Anand made no secret of his loyalty. He backed the world champion with Germany his second choice.
“Spain was completely superior in the final,” said Anand and continued, “I think things went wrong for Italy from the first goal. It was a very unusual header (from David Silva). There are many headers that volley into the goal. But this one rose the full length to hit the top of the net. Very unusual."
