Karabakh International Chess Tournament

Another fantastic event (17th category) hidden under World Championship shadow. This tournament takes place on October 2nd-11th in Stepanakert, capitol of Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The region is predominantly ethnic Armenian, but its political status is unrecognized. With only 145.000 of population, Karabakh has established Republican Chess School and a branch of the Armenian Chess Academy. This small country will, for no doubt, continue to produce world class chess players.

Experienced GM Ashot Anastasian, after winning Abu Dhabi Master tournament, is (unexpectedly) leading the race.

Standings after round 5 of 9:
1. GM Ashot Anastasian (Armenia 2596) 4 points
2. GM Levon Aronian (Armenia 2724) 3,5
3. GM Bu Xiangzhi (China 2637) 3
4-7. GM Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukraine 2748), GM Hikaru Nakamura (USA 2662), GM Karen Asrian (Armenia 2645), GM Bartlomiej Macieja (Poland 2592) 2,5
8. GM Ivan Sokolov (Netherlands 2696) 2
9. GM Alexey Dreev (Russia 2695) 1,5
10. GM Viorel Bologan (Moldova 2682) 1
