GM Henkin wins HSG Open in Hilversum

The 6th HSG Open 2011 was held on 24-26th June in Hilversum, Netherlands. The players were divided in two Groups, Open A for those rated over 1850 and Open B for U1900. Both tournament were played over six rounds of Swiss pairings, with two games per day.

After suffering a hit from the financial crisis and retirement of the long-time sponsor Joop van Oosterom, the tournament was reduced to only three playing days and the main prize went down from 3000 EUR to 1250 EUR. But the most important is that the tradition survives.

Four players shared the first place with 5.0 points each - Grandmasters Igor Khenkin (GER 2620), Predrag Nikolic (BIH 2630) and Alexandre Dgebuadze (BEL 2521), and the biggest surprise of the tournament, Nico Zwirs. GM Khenkin was declared winner, but the money prizes were split, so each of them earned 675 EUR. 44 players took part in Open A.

Open B featured 45 participants. Tobi Kooiman is the sole winner having collected five points.

Earlier winners of the HSG Open:
Karel van der Weide (2006)
Humpy Koneru (2007)

FCO: Fundamental Chess Openings

FCO: Fundamental Chess Openings

The first moves of a chess game define the nature of the whole struggle, as both players stake their claim to the critical squares and start to develop their plans. It is essential to play purposefully and to avoid falling into traps or reaching a position that you don't understand.

This is not a book that provides masses of variations to memorize. Paul van der Sterren instead offers a wealth of ideas and explanation, together with the basic variations of each and every opening. This knowledge will equip players to succeed in the opening up to good club level, and provide a superb grounding in opening play on which to build a more sophisticated repertoire.

The strategies he explains will, unlike ever-changing chess opening theory, remain valid as long as chess is played, and so the time spent studying this book will be rewarded many times over.

"...an absolutely ideal addition to personal and professional chess reference collections, and a highly recommended acquisition for academic and community libraries as well." - James A Cox, Midwest Book Review

"...a brilliant brand-new book which does actually make a very good attempt to summarise in one single volume the most important points pertaining to all chess opening theory" - GM Paul Motwani, The Scotsman

ShindigChess.com Masters Online Invitational

15 Master Chess Players competed in a first of its kind online chess tournament yesterday. The players, who competed in locations ranging from Brooklyn to Budapest, engaged each other in an online competition that combined video chat with a 3D interactive chess board.

NYC start-up Shindig created the ShindigChess.com website which enabled the chess pros from all over the globe to play chess as naturally as if they were sitting across the table from one another. The $1900 purse was won by GM Robert Hess, GM Baadur Jabava, GM Giorgi Kacheishvelli, GM Alex Lenderman, GM Bartosz Socko.

“I most enjoyed being able to see my opponents thinking, like I do when we are physically together” said GM Kacheishveili.

Online chess is a burgeoning field appealing to millions, competitive and casual players both. But many complain about the anonymity of playing online with people whose identities are impossible to confirm.

“Online one never really knows who your opponent is or whether they are using chess programs to gain advantage. I felt much more comfortable seeing my opponent” said IM Irina Krush. “and i enjoyed catching up with players I hadn’t seen in a while.”

Other GMs saw the platforms potential for teaching. “Many of my students are in the States and there is no good way to give them regular instruction. I see this being a great tool for connecting with aspiring Chess players” said GM Baadur Jobava, currently ranked as one of the top 40 players in the world playing from his home in Kiev, Ukriane.

Highlights of the tournament featuring excerpts of matches between are posted at the ShindigChess YouTube channel.

The company’s next tournament is a scholastic city wide tournament with NYC’s Chess in the Schools.

Novak Djokovic's fantastic winning streak ended

Roger Federer stopped Novak Djokovic from equaling one major tennis record, and now he has a chance to keep Rafael Nadal from matching another.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion moved into the French Open final for the fifth time, and he did it by spoiling Djokovic’s perfect season and ending his 43-match winning streak.

“Rafa and Novak and other guys have stopped me, too. It’s just the way it goes,” Federer said after beating Djokovic 7-6 (5), 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5) as darkness was settling over Court Philippe Chatrier. “I said it earlier, I wasn’t here to spoil the party.”

Bobby Fischer Against the World

Chess legend Bobby Fischer died on January 17, 2008 and within a day of reading his obituary, filmmaker Liz Garbus decided the young prodigy-turned-recluse would be the perfect subject for a documentary.

Fascinated by Fischer’s meteoric rise and fall, she spent the next two years researching details about Fischer’s life, tracking down archival footage, and interviewing the Brooklyn-born Fischer’s family, friends and colleagues. The resulting film, “Bobby Fischer Against the World,” makes its television debut on HBO June 6.

Garbus ultimately decided to focus her film on the 1972 World Championship chess match set in Reykjavik, Iceland between Fischer and Boris Spassky, a cultural event she calls “a metaphor wrapped in a metaphor.”
